Xiamen is a coastal city in Fujian province, China. This city was formerly known as Amoy in western circles. The name Xiamen means "door to house" as this city was known as the gateway of China. Xiamen is southern China's most sophisticated, vibrant, affluent and modern, though according to Chinese standard it is considered as a small city. Xiamen has many non-Chinese residents and a wide range of restaurants. It has several universities and some areas have popular tourist spots. The most popular tourists spot is Gulangyu which is a small island that contains some beautiful colonial buildings. It is also marked as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
